Fairvote Washington Rebrand
The beginning
In April of 2020, I volunteered to do some light graphic design for FairVote Washington after hearing that they were looking for some flyers to be redesigned. When I met with the Director, though, I realized that they needed much more than just a handful of flyers. Their website had been built one piece at a time as pages became necessary, and was in need of a total structural and brand overhaul.
They had just gotten their logo redesigned, so they requested that I follow the logo colors and basic style of that new logo.
Restructuring
The very first step was to make a comprehensive sticky note list of the pages that existed. I looked for redundancies, similar topics, and outdated information.
After taking inventory, I discussed each page with a small panel of people within the organization. They included the Director, the IT professionals, and public-facing coordinators. Basically anyone who had frequent, hands-on experience with what the information heirarchy really was.
After determining what information was necessary, what wasn’t, and what areas would work to condense together, I created a sitemap as an outline for the navigation.
Style Guide
Concurrent to the page audit, I was working on a new style guide. I worked primarily with the Field Director and the Communications Manager to create a visual identity for the organization. The brand needed to be political but non-partisan, and it needed to place itself comfortably in Washington State.
The style guide touches on print and online styles, as well as standards around image use and tone of voice in writing.
Results
Once the style guide and site audits were complete, I was able to create several deliverables for FVWA including the fully restructured website, redesigned online forms, and promotional materials.
